Karranoi

00 Where this comes from

Two real phrases from the Goosebumps franchise are the seed for everything here.

That reversal is the most important fact about this language. The same words, run backward, mean the opposite. Karranoi grammar is built around that single idea — see Grammar § Reversal.

01 Sounds

Karranoi is deliberately harsh and guttural. Heavy on rolled R’s and hard consonants, with a narrow, dark vowel set — and notably, no E sound at all.

02 Alphabet

Karranoi is written with the ordinary Latin alphabet, lightly stylized — readable at a glance even by someone who has never seen the language before. There is exactly one rule that breaks the pattern: the vowel U is always written as a dotted O.

Worked example

The word Karru (the verb root for “to wake”, found in the original spell) is spelled K–A–R–R–O: five letters, five sounds, no tricks.

03 Grammar

Karranoi keeps its grammar small on purpose, so it can actually be memorized and spoken. Four pieces: word order, noun class, tense, and two short marker words for questions and possession.

Word order & the reversal rule

Ordinary sentences run Subject → Verb → Object, same as English. The distinctive rule, taken directly from the source material, is this: reversing the word order of a phrase inverts or negates its meaning. Karranoi has no separate word for “not” — instead, you flip the sentence.

Noun classes

Every noun belongs to one of three classes, marked by its final letter. The third class exists specifically for things that occupy the uncanny space between living and dead — dummies, dolls, ghosts.

Class isn’t always mechanical — a handful of words were assigned their class by feel rather than formula, the way real folklore would. Vanu (soul) is Living because a soul is the seat of life; Vanoru (ghost) is Animate–dead because it’s a soul gone wrong.

Tense

Verbs never conjugate. Tense is shown with a single marker word placed directly before the verb.

Nu Lonu — I sleep · Nu Ko Lonu — I slept · Nu Na Lonu — I will sleep. The verb Lonu itself never changes shape.

Questions

Add ka to the very end of a sentence to turn a statement into a yes/no question — a spoken question mark. No word order change, no separate question words needed.

Du Vano Tova Ka — Are you going to the house?

Possession

A short word placed before the noun shows ownership.

Do Karano — your dummy.

Plurals

Add –i to the end of a noun to make it plural — it stacks directly onto the existing class ending, so the word still shows its noun class (living, inert, or animate-dead) at the same time as showing “more than one.”

More examples: Horu (friend) → Horui (friends). Karano (dummy) → Karanoi (dummies) — note this lands almost identical to Karranoi, the language’s own name. A small, deliberately unsettling coincidence: many dummies and “the tongue of waking-things” sound nearly the same.

It is a word-for-word lookup, not a grammar engine — Karranoi only has a couple hundred words of vocabulary, so this can’t translate everything, and it won’t apply word order, tense markers, or the reversal rule for you.
